Mirage caps aid reading mirage over a longer distance. Reducing the objective diameter of a scope has the same effect as changing the “F” setting on a manual camera. The result allows less light and increases the depth of field, allowing you to read mirage over a much longer distance. With your objective lens at full diameter you are reading mirage over only a few yards. The mirage may have stopped or actually be running in the opposite direction closer to the firing line. Shooters notice the lines on the target are more defined with the mirage cap in place, especially on hot afternoons with heavy mirage. The mirage caps may be a disadvantage during dark cloudy days or any other low light conditions where mirage can’t be seen or read.
