Once hunting season ends, shooting in an air rifle competition or two can help you stay sharp while using a quieter and somewhat less expensive (think ammo!) application.

Air rifle competitions have gained popularity among shooting enthusiasts of all skill levels. Whether you're a beginner looking to test your marksmanship skills or an experienced shooter aiming for precision, participating in an air rifle competition can be an exciting and rewarding experience. To ensure you're fully prepared for the event, it's essential to have the right equipment and accessories. In this blog, we'll explore what you need for an air rifle competition to give yourself the best chance of success.

Air Rifle

The most crucial element for any air rifle competition is, of course, the air rifle itself. Choose a rifle that suits your shooting style, preferences, and the competition category you're participating in. Consider factors such as weight, caliber, trigger mechanism, and overall design. It's also vital to become familiar with your rifle and practice extensively before the competition to develop consistency and accuracy.

What You Need For An Air Rifle Competition

Competitions to Consider

● 10m - most common for youth with civilian marksmanship programs.
● Field Target - think 3D Archery for airguns from 10-55 yards with target sizes from ⅜” - 2” in size
● Benchrest - 50 yards and 100 yard competitions. Major competitions tend to be out at 100 yards.
● PRS - Airguns are now competing with and beating some .22 rimfire
● Speed Shooting Challenges
● Big Bore Competitions shooting steel out to 300 yards. These are big game hunting style airguns in .357 calibers up to .50+ calibers.

(Air) Rifle Scope

All scopes will vary depending on individual preferences, shooting style, and requirements. But for an air rifle competition, we need to consider something that maximizes elevation, has considerable eye relief, and a great reticle option. Having the ability to match your reticle with adjustments can make all the difference between watching the awards ceremony and being a part of it.

Ammunition

There’s an old saying, Better to be looking at them than looking for them. Meaning that having sufficient ammunition is essential to compete effectively. We’d all rather go home with extras rather than run out midway through. So, make sure you have an ample supply of high-quality pellets and in some cases you might be shooting slugs that are specific to your air rifle's caliber. Different competitions may have specific pellet or slug requirements, so ensure that you're using the appropriate type, caliber, and weight to meet the rules and regulations of the event.

Shooting Glasses

Protecting your eyes during a competition is crucial and in many cases required. Invest in a pair of shooting glasses designed to provide adequate eye protection while allowing maximum visibility. Look for glasses with shatterproof lenses and adjustable frames for a comfortable fit. Clear or lightly tinted lenses are generally preferred for indoor shooting ranges, while darker lenses may be suitable for outdoor events.

Shooting Mat

A shooting mat provides a stable and comfortable surface for shooting from prone or kneeling positions. Opt for a mat that offers sufficient padding to protect your body from rocks, debris, or uneven terrain. Look for features like non-slip backing, waterproof material, and even carrying handles for convenience during transport. - Not much in the airgun world is shot off a mat.

Shooting Rest or Bipod

A shooting rest or bipod can stabilize your air rifle during the competition, improving accuracy and consistency. These accessories help reduce fatigue and ensure a steady aim. Choose a shooting rest or bipod that is compatible with your air rifle and adjustable to your preferred height and angle.

What You Need For An Air Rifle Competition

The Accu-Tac Bipod is my personal favorite. The legs can be deployed to 90° or 45° position, locking securely into 4 positions. It also has the ability to cant, which can each be locked and secured with the adjustable lever.

Range Finder

A range finder can be a valuable tool for determining the distance to your target accurately. This information is crucial for making precise adjustments when lining up the shot. Look for a compact and reliable range finder that offers quick and accurate readings; and can be quickly and easily accessed in your kit. Some range finders also have additional features like slope compensation, which can be advantageous in certain competition scenarios. Range Finders are not allowed during competitions, but are very helpful for prep when setting out targets to specific and sometimes odd ranges. .

Shooting Bag or Backpack

Having a dedicated bag or backpack to carry your equipment is essential for staying organized and protecting your gear. Look for a bag with compartments or pockets to store your rifle, ammunition, shooting glasses, range finder, air tank, fill accessories if you are shooting a pcp and other accessories. Consider durability, comfort, and ease of access when choosing a shooting bag or backpack. Many airgunners also look at a tank bag to carry necessary accessories.

Maintenance Kit

To ensure your air rifle operates smoothly during the competition, it's essential to have a maintenance kit. This should include items such as cleaning brushes, lubricants, spare parts, and tools necessary for basic maintenance and repairs. Regular cleaning and maintenance help prevent malfunctions and keep your rifle in optimal condition. Make sure that any cleaning solvents are safe for airgun use. Typical firearm chemicals are not and will actually destroy sealing surfaces.

Participating in an air rifle competition requires careful preparation and having the right equipment and accessories. By investing in a high-quality air rifle, scope, ammunition, and all the other necessaries, you'll be well-equipped to at the very least have a good time and learn something new.

Remember to practice regularly, familiarize yourself with your equipment, and adhere to safety protocols. With dedication, skill, and the right gear, you'll be ready to showcase your marksmanship abilities and enjoy the thrill and camaraderie of competition.
