Long Range Rifle Scopes

Long range rifle scopes have come a long way in the past several years, helping shooters achieve distances they may have never thought possible.

Becoming a good long-range shooter takes fundamentals, a lot of practice, and the proper equipment. You could have the rifle that’s built to shoot sub-MOA out of the box, but without the proper optics, you’re severely handicapped. And vice versa.

In the hunting and shooting arenas, the technology to develop long range rifle scopes has helped enhance the capabilities of people around the world who are simply interested in becoming better shots. Really, this is a boyhood notion that begins with a Red Ryder. You find yourself in front of a line of Coke cans and pretty soon you can’t miss. The upgrade to a .22 comes along and so on. You’re solidifying the fundamentals at a young age that you may not realize at the time can take you to great distances as a shooter.

Long Range Rifle Scopes shooting skills

If you’re looking to enhance your long-range shooting skills, we’re here to help. While we can suggest rifles that have served us well over the years, we can absolutely give you advice on the best long range rifle scopes.

Many of you who have read our blog or who have picked up the phone and called Jon Allen or Jon LaCorte (631-662-7354), know that TRACT’s ultimate goal is to help shooters and hunters. It’s the nature of our company. That and we saw what other manufacturers were charging for mediocre optics and we decided to do something about it.

Know Thy Rifle

For starters, let’s assume you have a great rifle. You can punch holes in the target of distances up to, say, 400 yards, consistently. Any longer and you start to get erratic. This is most likely because you’ve maxed out your scope. It’s time for an upgrade.

Buy the Best Glass You Can Afford

Buy the best glass you can afford. We’ve essentially said it twice because it’s that important if you want to maximize the efficiency of your cartridge. Good glass is everywhere. You can walk into your local gun shop and find good glass. But great glass takes some research to find.

What Makes Great Glass

Great glass starts with the optical system. We call ours UHD, which stands for Ultra High Definition. This system comprises fully multi-coated SCHOTT HT (high transmission) glass. We’ve also incorporated an ED (Extra Low Dispersion) lens. This combination results in a long range rifle scope that provides super bright images and incredible light transmission in any lighting situation.

This scope should have sufficient eye relief, which will make the shooting experience much more comfortable. A large objective lens not only allows more light to reach your eye, it also provides better resolution for long-range targets, especially at high magnifications. Last but not least, a great rifle scope has a glass-etched reticle. And what kind of reticle you choose, whether that be your basic T-Plex reticle or the more advanced bullet drop compensation (BDC), MOA or Milliradian (MRAD), is totally up to you.

Choose a Reticle

In a recent blog, “Understanding Rifle Scope Reticles,” we provided a general understanding on the various types of reticles you’ll most likely see when it’s time to choose a scope. It boils down to what you’re comfortable with and what application the scope will be used for. Since we’re talking about long range rifle scopes, we’d suggest, or perhaps better yet, urge you to consider a BDC-style, MOA or Milliradian (MRAD) reticles. These types of reticles are designed to give you true points of aim at known distances. The guys and gals who consistently shoot well at long distances are using one of these options.

The ELR (Extreme Long Range) reticle can be found in the TORIC 4.5-30x56 Extreme Long Range Rifle Scopes and is available in MOA or MRAD versions.

As a direct-to-consumer optics brand, we are able to put more into our rifle scopes and binoculars because we’ve nixed the cost of a middleman. More importantly, this works out well on the other end, for you. Our intention is to give you the best at a reasonable price. We also promise to pick up the phone when you call.
